It’s beginning to look a lot like sickness

I am now on Day 7 of my cold.

I hate being sick during the Christmas season. Our tree isn’t up yet, I haven’t done any Christmas baking, and I’ve only bought one present. I feel so behind!

But I know that my cold will go away and my Christmas to-do list will eventually get done, but right now I feel entitled to be whiny and miserable.

I survived the week mostly on water and DayQuil, but it didn’t help shut off the faucet of a nose I’ve had to deal with. I finally had to poll my Facebook friends on Friday to see what else I should try. One friend recommended Advil Cold & Sinus, so I stopped in the drugstore during my lunch break and went one step further and bought Advil Cold & Sinus Plus. They “may cause drowsiness”, but the number of Kleenexes I used that afternoon went down significantly, so I wasn’t going to complain. I also had a Christmas party to attend Friday night, so I begrudgingly took two more and had to pass on rum & Cokes. Sad face.

My weekend consisted of more liquids, cold meds, and Kleenex. When I wasn’t sleeping, I was glued to Mrs. Brown’s Boys on Netflix. It reminds me a little bit of Royal Canadian Air Farce with the way the studio audience is included in the show, and I love how they include outtakes while the show is going on instead of leaving them until the end credits.

Hopefully next week I will be able to report that I am all better and have been extremely productive. Pray for Mojo.

Your turn!

Have you caught the cold that is going around? I can name three co-workers who I think I caught my cold from.

What are your tried-and-true remedies for getting rid of a cold? What about ways to avoid getting sick in the first place? DO  TELL!

  1. I laughed out loud at Pray for Mojo… I love all your Simpsons references! I’m also sick, but for the first time in 14 months, which is a new record for me! We just got back from Mexico and there were SO many coughing people on the plane, so I’m not surprised. I’ve prevented colds/flus for 14 months with ColdFX, Echinacea, zinc and avoiding sick people haha (people can say what they like about the efficacy of my supplements, but for me, the reduction in the number of illnesses I’ve contracted is proof enough for me). Germs on a plane for 5 hours with dry air is something not much can help though… although I did read that the reason drinking water helps your immune system is by helping to produce mucous, which flushes away germs from your nasal cavities, etc (yum!). For the same reason, spraying a saline solution up your nose and blowing can also help prevent colds. That’s something I hadn’t thought of before, so I’ll be adding that one to my carry-on bag!

Did you know that the only difference between Dayquil and Nyquil is that Nyquil has an antihistamine in it? That’s why your nose still ran when you were taking Dayquil. Antihistamines make you drowsy, which you don’t want during the day so they skip it, but then it “helps you sleep” when you take Nyquil. :) There is no non-drowsy way to stop a runny nose (although I haven’t tried allergy meds, some of which don’t cause drowsiness — I may investigate this), but if you can manage through the drowsiness, it’s fine to take Nyquil during the day. Advil Cold and Sinus Plus uses Doxylamine succinate as its antihistamine, and Nyquil uses Pseudoephedrine Hydrochloride. If you commit common cold remedy ingredients to memory, you can save money by finding a generic that has the same ingredients in it.

I should watch some Mrs. Brown’s Boys too! I watched one episode with a friend and enjoyed it, but forgot about it since! Get well soon!

    • It’s funny that you mention allergy meds because I had some leftover from when my left ear was blocked and I couldn’t hear well. I took one shortly after reading your comment and my nose is less runny, so thank you for mentioning them!

Sadly, I just finished the last Christmas special of Mrs. Brown’s Boys. Such a good show! I wish there were more episodes.
